Stanley June - interview
A new single and music video is out from Stanley June. We talked to the South African musician about defining love and exploring new ground.
Music comes out of anything, anywhere, at any time. When doing the laundry. Or skateboarding. Or from sounds or people, according to Icelandic Júníus Meyvant. We had a talk with the talented young musician about music and sounds at any time, anywhere.
They grew up on the streets. That’s where they learned how to perform music, to be spontanious and relaxed. Meet Riders Connection from Berlin, Germany, bringing together a special blend of reggae, folk, and soul without ever using any drum kit.
The Swedish rock-/punkband Terrible Feelings has just released a brand new album filled with energy and power. We talked to Terrible Feelings’ Andy Instigate, whom, by the way, is the proud owner of a pair of DALI loudspeakers.
Jacob Bellens is renowned for his ability to pen delicate, almost simple melody lines – and interpret them in a very personal way with his highly characteristic voice. His latest album, My Convictions, underlines his strengths, reaching far beyond his country's borders. This time presented through a collection of songs of a more light nature. Which is no coincidence:
Alice Boman’s voice hits you with presence and fragility draped in direct and emotional music that doesn’t try to puff itself up. Or, as the Swedish singer expresses it herself: - I think my music is quite simple. And I want it to feel kind of timeless, just like that; that it is, what it is. Not too much fuss, she explains and highlight the track All Eyes On You as her own favourite example as regards sound and feeling.
My music is handmade. Like it used to be in the past, but with the great sound of today. Says ELEN, the talented young German singer, whom financed her international debut via crowdfunding and whose background as a street musician formed her understanding of music and appreciation of good sound.
Jeffrey Lewis is the rare combination of a musician and a comic book artist in one person. He’s been compared to Bob Dylan’s lyrical capacities, Rolling Stone Magazine calls him downright inspiring, and Jarvis Cocker of Pulp finds him to be “the best lyricist working in the US today”. We talked to him about music and so-called good sound while he’s sitting in his living room in NYC on a snowy spring day.
KIRSTINE STUBBE TEGLBJÆRG
Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjærg, whom we know from the world-acclaimed band Blue Foundation, recently released her very personal debut album “Hamskifte” (“Sloughing”, ed.)
Jacco Gardner is a strange bird on the music scene. He doesn’t seem to accept time in its usual shape. And has a fresh view on the possibilities and risks that comes with the digital evolution. Welcome to a young dreamer from the Netherlands, whom, in his own words, exceeds in “light psychedelic pop music”.
Philippe Talec (violin), Antoine Landowsi (cello), and Boris de Larochelambert (piano) met in the Paris Conservatory and created the Trio Chausson back in 2001. And they played together ever since.
Moscow is well-known for its turbulent history, its unique architecture, authors, science, politics. Yet, what’s happening on the musical scene in 2013? We talked to a qualified ambassador. ZAGREB GUITAR QUARTET
Bach. There’s no hesitation when I ask who the most challenging classical composer to perform as a guitar quartet is. It’s Bach. Always was and always will be. We’ll get back to Bach during the interview, but first, let’s introduce this highly acknowledged classical guitar quartet:
Yes, he’s the son of Paul Simon. Yet, he’s also a highly competent musician in his own right. He now announces the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut with new album, Division Street, produced by Tom Rothrock (Elliot Smith, Beck).
Peter Morén is well-known from the band Peter Bjorn and John in his homeland Sweden, yet he also has his own, successful solo career. So far, he's released three albums, the latest being "Pyramiden" (2012). We asked him to describe the difference between his band- and his solo career:
The acclaimed Danish musician Marie Fisker recently released a brand new album Autumn 2012, so far receiving excellent reviews. In the middle of her busy schedule, we talked to her about her music, happiness, why mp3’s suck, and even about our very own DALI loudspeakers.
We had the pleasure of talking to the Italian guitar virtuoso Antonio Forcione about his music and brand new album, "Sketches of Africa", which is inspired by his travels to the Continent.
Transparency! Sinne Eeg doesn’t hesitate when I ask her what the most important sound element is when producing. Along with depth, top, and crispness – while still embracing a warm and not hard sound -, transparency is definitely a keyword to Sinne Eeg. It’s all about passing on your expression and musical vision directly and clearly.
We invited the acclaimed British producer, songwriter, and musician Ken Rose to share his all-time favourite recordings with us. Including David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Eels, and more.
The Faroese singer Teitur has proven to be a lasting, unique voice on the western music scene. Right now, he’s in the middle of a large-scale tour – in Chicago, which is one of his favourite US cities because, as he claims, it’s got a real soul.
Josh Rouse is restless. A nomad musician, always looking ahead, back, and searching for new geographical and musical territories. Born in Nebraska, USA, he has toured frequently all over Europe, and currently recides in Spain.
MATT THE ELECTRICIAN
Once there was a guy called Matt. Matt was an electrician in real life. Then he got rid of the wires in exchange for guitar strings. And so he became a full-time musician. Because that’s what he really wanted to do.
Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, and Chris Martin. Paul McCartney, Lucinda Williams, Michael Bublé, and Steve Earle. The fans of Ron Sexsmith are many and notable. Yet this shy, Canadian songwriter never really had the major breakthrough his crowd of admirers believe he deserves.
LARSEN AND FURIOUS JANE
Three years after their widely acknowledged album, ”Zen Sucker” (2008), Danish rock band Larsen & Furious Jane is back with a brand new album. The Canadian roots/folk duo Madison Violet is on the road. A lot! In between recording and winning awards such as the international John Lennon songwriting contest, that is. None the less, lead singer Brenley MacEachern found time to speak to us - on a mobile phone in a car in the roadside somewhere in Devon, UK
DAVE DAVIES / THE KINKS
Dave Davies and his brother Ray Davies fronted The Kinks for more than 30 years, achieved world-wide stardom, and penned now-classics such as “You Really Got Me”, “Waterloo Sunset”, Death of a Clown”, and “Lola”.
The Kinks are one of the most influential bands in rock’n’roll history. Now the founder and guitarist of the band, Dave Davies, take us on a trip through his life in music and spirituality in his “Mystikal Journey” documentary. It’s a physical walk through his childhood neighbourhood in London
Danish rock band Figurines attracted international attention and toured the US after releasing their album "When the Deer Wore Blue" in 2007. Now they're back.
