ZEMTSOV VIOLA QUARTET

They impress and inspire with familiar and unknown pieces.

Verano Porteno is a demonstration of how to record a string quartet. Although this is some of the most difficult music to record, on this recording you can actually hear the individual instruments, positioned precisely to create an impressively wide stereo image.

A Family of Violas
The Zemtsov Viola Quartet consists of four family members, all playing the viola: Mikhail Zemtsov, Alexander Zemtsov, Julia Dinerstein and Dana Zemtsov. All four have studied with the great Russian viola virtuoso, Michael Kugel and each pursue a brilliant professional solo career. Together, they perform rarely-heard classical compositions and arrangements for four violas.

Their debut appearance as a viola quartet was in 2010 at the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam. This was the start of a series of concerts at which they impress and inspire their international audience with familiar and unknown pieces.

Astor Piazzolla, the composer of the quartet's contribution to this compilation, was the most famous Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player and arranger of the 20th century. His oeuvre revolutionised traditional tango into a new style termed 'tango nuevo', incorporating elements from jazz and classical music.

Verano Porteno is one of our favourite classical pieces and offers an immersive listening experience, especially on loudspeakers equipped with high-quality tweeters.
