DALI Subwoofers

Deep, controlled bass is the foundation of truly immersive sound. A dedicated subwoofer doesn’t just deliver more bass: while it will increase low-frequency extension, it also gives better bass, bringing music, movies and games to life by reproducing the lowest frequencies with precision, authority and effortless dynamics. Whether you’re building a high‑performance stereo system or a full home cinema, a DALI subwoofer adds that depth and physical impact smaller speakers simply cannot deliver.

What is a subwoofer?

A subwoofer is a specialised loudspeaker designed to reproduce the lowest part of the audio spectrum — typically from around 20–200 Hz. These deep bass frequencies are felt as much as they are heard, adding weight, scale and realism to any listening experience. Unlike full‑range speakers, which must balance midrange clarity and high‑frequency detail, a subwoofer focuses solely on low‑frequency reproduction using amplification and drive-units designed purely for bass. Letting a subwoofer take care of the bass also frees the rest of your system to perform with greater openness and freedom.

What does a subwoofer do?

A subwoofer enhances your system in three key ways:

  • Extends bass response — delivering frequencies that most speakers cannot reproduce on their own.

  • Improves clarity — by relieving your main speakers of the need to attempt to deliver the most demanding low frequencies.

  • Adds physical impact — making explosions, drums and basslines feel more lifelike and engaging.

In both music and film, a well‑integrated subwoofer creates a more balanced, full‑range soundstage that feels natural and emotionally involving.

How does a subwoofer work?

A subwoofer reproduces the lowest frequencies in your system using one or more large, long‑throw woofers powered by a high‑efficiency amplifier, all housed in a rigid, low‑resonance cabinet. By moving significant volumes of air with precision, it delivers the deep bass that adds scale and physical presence to music and film soundtracks.

DALI subwoofers are engineered for control, accuracy and low mechanical loss through:

  • Long‑throw drivers for clean, linear movement

  • Oversized magnet systems for tight, responsive bass

  • High‑power Class D amplifiers with ample headroom

  • Low‑loss design principles that preserve timing and detail

These elements work together to produce bass that is deep yet agile, powerful yet never overwhelming.

Sealed vs ported subwoofers

The enclosure design has a major influence on how a subwoofer behaves. The two most common approaches — sealed and ported — each offer distinct strengths.

  • Sealed subwoofers use an airtight enclosure that naturally controls the driver’s movement, resulting in fast, precise bass with excellent transient response. This makes them ideal for music‑focused systems, where timing and articulation matter most.

  • Ported subwoofers use a tuned bass reflex port to increase efficiency and extend low‑frequency output. This design delivers deeper, more powerful bass with less amplifier strain, making it well‑suited to larger rooms and home cinema setups.

Both designs can perform exceptionally well when matched to your room, system and listening preferences.

Which subwoofer should I choose?

The right subwoofer depends on your room size, listening habits and system configuration.

  • For smaller rooms, a compact subwoofer with a 9–10" driver offers excellent performance without overpowering the space.

  • For medium to large rooms, a 12–14" model provides greater output, deeper extension and more effortless dynamics.

  • For home cinema, look for a subwoofer with high power reserves and deep low‑frequency capability to reproduce LFE (Low Frequency Effects) tracks accurately.

  • For stereo systems, choose a musical, fast‑responding subwoofer able to blend naturally with bookshelf or floorstanding speakers.

DALI subwoofers are designed to complement all DALI speaker series, from KUPID to KORE.

Where should a subwoofer be placed?

Placement has a significant impact on bass performance. While every room is different, a few principles apply:

  • Front of the room placing a subwoofer close to your main speakers usually offers the best integration with those speakers.

  • Corner placement increases output but may exaggerate room resonances.

  • Along a side wall can smooth bass response in challenging rooms.

Experimentation is key. Small adjustments, even 20–30 cm, can dramatically improve clarity and balance.

How to connect and align subwoofer and speakers

A subwoofer connects to your amplifier or AV receiver via a dedicated LFE output – usually found in AV receivers and amplifier, or a full range line‑level output, with the frequency the subwoofer handles being controlled by a low-pass crossover within the subwoofer itself. Once connected, fine‑tuning ensures seamless integration:

  • Set the crossover so the subwoofer takes over where your speakers naturally roll off.

  • Adjust phase to align timing between subwoofer and speakers.

  • Match volume so bass feels present but never dominant.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need a subwoofer?

In many systems, you’ll want a subwoofer when your existing speakers can’t deliver the depth or impact you’re looking for. A subwoofer becomes especially valuable if you enjoy bass‑rich music, want more realism in movies, or you simply want a fuller, more balanced soundstage. It also helps smaller speakers perform at their best by filling in the most demanding low frequencies, which are beyond the capabilities of relatively small mid/bass drive-units.
