DALI SUB V-16 F: Tamed Brute Force

For a long-time Hi-Fi enthusiast in Tromsø, Norway, the final piece of a carefully developed system was not a new amplifier, louder loudspeakers or a different source component. It was bass.

Not more bass, but better bass.

Despite years of refining his two-channel system and investing heavily in room treatment, one challenge remained: achieving low frequencies that delivered genuine physical impact while remaining perfectly integrated with the music.

The solution eventually arrived in the form of the DALI SUB V-16 F.

What surprised him most was not simply the amount of bass it could produce, but what it revealed.

The bass has a lot of definition. It brought out different layers of detail in the bass that I have never heard before."

A system built through curiosity

His interest in Hi-Fi developed gradually.

Like many enthusiasts, it began with car audio before evolving into a much deeper fascination with home music reproduction after moving to Norway.

I think a lot of people don't realise what they're missing until they experience a truly great system."

Since then, every upgrade has been driven by curiosity rather than brand loyalty. Components have come and gone, measurements have been taken, room acoustics explored and countless hours spent listening. The journey has been one of careful refinement rather than chasing specifications.

Yet despite the system reaching an exceptionally high level, one problem refused to disappear.

The bass.

When the room becomes part of the system

His listening room is far from an ideal acoustic space.

Concrete construction, an unconventional layout and limited placement options make low-frequency behaviour particularly challenging. Extensive acoustic treatment dramatically improved clarity throughout the room, but deep bass remained difficult to control.

The room is one of the most important components in any system," he explains.

Like many enthusiasts, he discovered that integrating a subwoofer successfully is often less about adding extension than about working with the realities of the listening environment.

System overview

  • DALI EPICON 8 loudspeakers

  • DALI SUB V-16 F

  • Hegel H390 integrated amplifier

  • Bluesound NODE ICON streamer

  • External DAC and DDC

  • Dedicated acoustically treated listening room

Challenging a long-held belief

Before the SUB V-16 F arrived, he had never seriously considered a ported subwoofer for a high-end stereo system.

Like many experienced audiophiles, he associated sealed designs with superior speed, control and musicality.

I was very sceptical. A ported subwoofer was simply not something I would normally consider."

Over several years he auditioned multiple premium subwoofers, each bringing improvements but never quite delivering what he was searching for.

What I wanted wasn't a subwoofer that sounded impressive. I wanted one that disappeared into the system."

Then, encouraged by Bernt and the team at HiFi Klubben in Tromsø, he decided to leave those preconceptions behind and simply listen.

It proved to be a turning point.

An instant change

The first listening session with the SUB V-16 F immediately challenged everything he thought he knew about ported subwoofers.

I was just blown away by it. It was an instant love."

Rather than drawing attention to itself, the subwoofer integrated naturally into the presentation. Bass no longer felt detached from the loudspeakers. Instead, it became part of the soundstage, anchoring instruments and voices exactly where they belonged.

It completed the system."

Precision made practical

One of the biggest surprises came during setup.

Although comfortable using measurement microphones and acoustic software, he found himself relying largely on the SUB V-16 F's own built-in DSP.

A troublesome room mode around 70 Hz could be addressed quickly using the intuitive front-panel controls, allowing the bass to lock into place without complicated external processing.

I was able to dial this thing in and snap the bass into place."

Just as importantly, the controls encouraged experimentation.

The DSP is extremely well thought out. You don't have to be an expert. You can dial it in really, really well just by listening."

For him, that reflects thoughtful engineering designed around real listening rooms rather than ideal laboratory conditions.

Speed, definition and complete integration

What ultimately impressed him most was how the SUB V-16 F combined effortless output with remarkable control.

Even demanding electronic music with rapid transients remained tight and articulate, while acoustic recordings revealed greater texture and nuance than he had previously experienced.

It is very fast, very spot on. Even with extremely fast music, it keeps up perfectly."

Equally important was what happened when the volume came down.

It disappears into the system. That's something I did not have before."

Instead of constantly adjusting subwoofer levels from one recording to the next, the presentation remained balanced regardless of programme material.

The result was not simply deeper bass, but a more convincing musical performance across every genre.

Listening highlights

  • The War on Drugs – Thinking of a Place
Expansive psychedelic indie rock with a vast soundstage and deep, rolling bass that the SUB V-16 F reproduces with exceptional control.

  • Astral Projection – Into the Void
Relentless psytrance packed with layers of electronic bass. The subwoofer maintains remarkable grip, speed and definition.

  • Madrugada – Vocal
Deep vocal textures and atmospheric production reveal the subwoofer's ability to add weight without sacrificing clarity.

  • Malabarisk – Leve På
Fast kick drums and aggressive basslines from the Tromsø metal band demonstrate the SUB V-16 F's transient precision.

  • Bruckner – Symphony No. 7 (Celibidache)
A powerful example of the subwoofer's ability to reproduce orchestral scale, dynamics and the lowest frequencies with realism and authority.

Keeping an open mind

Looking back, he believes the biggest lesson was not about room acoustics or DSP.

It was about challenging assumptions.

Don't believe everything you've heard on the internet," he says. "I had convinced myself that a ported subwoofer simply wasn't for a serious two-channel system. I was wrong."

He is equally enthusiastic when talking about the people who encouraged him to try it.

Bernt and the crew at HiFi Klubben in Tromsø are the coolest people. They're infectious when it comes to music systems. I can't say enough good things about them."

For him, the experience reinforced an important point.

This taught me it's about the engineering, not the labels. When something is designed properly, you get all the control, all the speed and all the musicality you want, together with effortless low-frequency extension."

More than deeper bass

Asked to describe the SUB V-16 F in just three words, he chose "tamed brute force."

It is a fitting description.

Powerful enough to energise the room with effortless authority, yet refined enough to disappear completely into the music, the SUB V-16 F did not simply extend the performance of his system.

It unlocked it.

Key takeaways

  • Initially dismissed ported subwoofers for serious stereo listening

  • Integrated the SUB V-16 F using its onboard DSP without complex external processing

  • Solved a persistent room mode around 70 Hz

  • Revealed greater bass definition, texture and layering than previous solutions

  • Performs equally convincingly with electronic music, rock, acoustic recordings and large-scale classical works

  • Most importantly, the subwoofer disappears into the soundstage instead of drawing attention to itself
