An exploration of how music, attentive listening and great sound can change the way we experience the world.
When we listen differently
We experience the world through our senses, yet rarely stop to consider how much they shape what we notice. Sight often takes the lead. When it changes, other senses can take on a different significance.
For Morten Bonde, music has always been an important part of life. Living with a hereditary eye condition that has gradually taken his sight, he has had to find new ways of navigating and experiencing the world. As his vision has declined, listening has become increasingly important. Not because he suddenly hears better than other people, but because he has learned to pay closer attention to what he hears.
Music contains far more than the notes themselves. There is the character of a voice, the space of a recording, the texture of an instrument and the subtle details that give a performance its sense of life. When we take the time to listen, more of that comes into focus.
Listening Beyond Sight brings together Morten's personal experience with DALI's perspective on sound and loudspeaker design in a series of five short films. Together, they explore how music can create presence, bring back memories, change our mood and connect us to the world around us, and how natural, detailed sound can deepen that experience.
Before you watch
Before watching the films, take a moment to listen.
Put on a pair of headphones or sit down in front of your speakers. Close your eyes and listen for thirty seconds.
Notice the sounds around you. The details within the music. Perhaps even the spaces between the notes.
Then press play.
The films
1. When sight fades, sound becomes life
As Morten's sight has gradually declined, music has taken on a different significance. In the opening film, he reflects on how his attention to sound has changed and how listening has become another way of experiencing the world.
2. Listening with the whole body
Music exists in space as much as it exists in our ears. We can feel the weight of a bass note, the impact of a drum and the movement of sound through a room.
Morten describes his physical experience of music, while Lars Worre shares some of the thinking behind DALI's approach to low distortion, cabinet design and wide dispersion, all in pursuit of a natural and immersive listening experience.
3. My daily source of energy
Music can change the atmosphere of a moment. It can provide energy, calm or simply shift our perspective.
For Morten, listening has become part of his everyday life and wellbeing. This film explores how music can create moments of focus, enjoyment and presence.
4. A song is a memory you can hear
A few familiar notes can take us back to a person, a place or a moment with remarkable immediacy.
Morten reflects on the connection between sound and memory, while Lars Worre considers how clarity and detail can help preserve the elements that make musical memories so vivid.
5. My concert hall at home
Music can also keep us connected to experiences that become harder to access.
For Morten, a great recording can bring something of the atmosphere of a live performance into his home.
Lars Worre explores how a good loudspeaker can reproduce a recording in a way that brings the listener closer to the original performance.
For Morten, his living room has become something of a personal concert hall.
More than hearing
Listening is something we often take for granted. We are surrounded by sound throughout the day, yet much of it disappears into the background.
For people who are blind or visually impaired, the relationship with sound can be different. Without sight providing the same amount of information about the world, hearing can become a more consciously trained and closely observed sense. Many learn to pay particular attention to the direction, distance and detail of sounds around them.
In that sense, people who are blind can be described as black belt listeners. Not because they necessarily have better hearing, but because many have spent years developing their ability to listen in the absence of sight.
There is something in that perspective that can be relevant to all of us. In a world filled with information and distraction, listening carefully can be a way of slowing down and becoming more present. It can help us notice what is easy to miss: the breath before a singer begins, the resonance of a piano, the texture of an instrument or the subtle atmosphere of a recording.
Perhaps great listening is not about hearing more, but about getting more out of what we hear.
Why sound matters
At DALI, the pursuit of better sound has never been solely about technical performance. Technology and craftsmanship are the means; the experience of music is the reason.
From reducing distortion to developing loudspeakers with wide dispersion, every element of a DALI loudspeaker is designed with the relationship between listener and music in mind. The ambition is to reproduce a recording naturally and faithfully, allowing the loudspeaker itself to become less noticeable.
When that happens, attention can move away from the equipment and towards what matters: the music, the performance and the feeling it creates.
Morten's story offers another perspective on why those details matter. As sight has gradually become less reliable, sound has become a more important part of how he experiences the world.
For DALI, Listening Beyond Sight is an opportunity to look beyond specifications and return to the reason we care about sound in the first place: because music can move us, energise us, comfort us, bring back memories and make us feel present.
DALI and Dansk Blindesamfund
DALI is proud to be a sponsor of Dansk Blindesamfund, an organisation working to improve the lives and opportunities of people who are blind or visually impaired.
The relationship reflects a shared interest in greater awareness, inclusion and understanding of what it means to experience the world without sight. It also connects naturally with DALI's belief that music and sound can be a source of enjoyment, connection and quality of life for everyone.
Listening Beyond Sight is one expression of that shared perspective. It is a story about listening more closely and discovering what sound can bring to our lives.
Meet Morten Bonde
Morten Bonde is a former Senior Art Director at LEGO, keynote speaker and author. Living with the progressive eye condition retinitis pigmentosa, he has spent many years exploring how changing perspective can influence the way we experience challenges and possibilities.
Today, he speaks internationally about resilience, perspective and focusing on possibilities rather than limitations.
Music has been a constant throughout his life, and as his sight has declined, listening has become an increasingly important part of how he experiences the world.
Morten is the author of Sentenced to Blindness – Now What?, (in Danish Dømt blind - hva' så?) in which he shares his personal journey of coming to terms with gradually losing his sight and finding a new way forward.
His new book, 6 indre tilstande - fra fastlåst til fri, will be published on 6 October 2026. The book explores how our thoughts, interpretations and inner stories can keep us feeling stuck, and how changing the way we meet life can change the way we experience it.
DALI RUBIKORE 8
The loudspeakers featured in Listening Beyond Sight are DALI RUBIKORE 8. With three powerful woofers, a detailed hybrid tweeter and wide dispersion, the RUBIKORE 8 delivers a natural, spacious and highly detailed listening experience that brings music to life throughout the room.
Close your eyes
For a moment, leave the screen behind.
Put on your favourite music. Close your eyes and listen. Give it your full attention. Notice the details, the space and the things you might normally overlook.
Then open your eyes again.
Perhaps you heard something differently.
