Small speakers, bigger sound: Why a subwoofer makes sense in a compact stereo system

You don't need a large room, large loudspeakers or a complicated Hi-Fi system to enjoy great stereo sound. In fact, a compact stereo system can be one of the most rewarding ways to listen to music. Two well-designed bookshelf or standmount speakers can create an impressive stereo image while fitting naturally into modern living spaces.

But what if you want your compact speakers to sound bigger? What if you enjoy the clarity and simplicity of a small stereo system, but would like more depth, weight and scale from your music?

Adding a subwoofer could be the answer.

A well-integrated subwoofer does much more than simply add bass. In a 2.1 stereo system, it can extend the low-frequency range, add physicality to music and give compact speakers the support they need to create a fuller, more convincing listening experience.

For owners of compact loudspeakers such as the DALI KUPID and DALI SONIK 1, this makes a subwoofer a particularly interesting upgrade.

What does a subwoofer add to a stereo system?

When people think about adding a subwoofer to their Hi-Fi system, the first thing that often comes to mind is more bass. But for music listening, the real benefit is not necessarily about making the bass louder. It is about making the entire system sound more complete.

Music contains a surprising amount of information at the lowest frequencies. A kick drum has weight as well as attack. A bass guitar gives music its foundation. A grand piano reaches far deeper than its size might suggest, while orchestral recordings can contain very low frequencies that contribute to the scale and atmosphere of the performance.

A good subwoofer allows you to experience more of this information.

You may not even notice the subwoofer itself. Instead, you might notice that the music sounds bigger. Bass instruments have greater depth and authority. Drums have more physical impact. Large recordings feel more spacious and convincing, while electronic music can gain an extra sense of depth and energy.

This is the difference between simply adding more bass and creating a more complete stereo system.

Why add a subwoofer to compact or bookshelf speakers?

Compact speakers have an obvious advantage: they fit easily into your home.

A pair of bookshelf or standmount speakers can be placed on dedicated stands, furniture or shelves, depending on the design. They are easier to accommodate in smaller rooms and can provide a serious stereo experience without dominating the space.

The trade-off is that reproducing the very lowest frequencies is physically demanding. Deep bass requires a speaker to move a significant amount of air, and there are natural limitations to how much low-frequency energy a small cabinet and driver can produce.

That doesn't mean a compact speaker is incomplete. Far from it.

It simply means that there is an opportunity to divide the job between two types of loudspeaker.

Your main stereo speakers can concentrate on creating the stereo image and reproducing vocals, instruments and detail, while a dedicated subwoofer takes responsibility for the deepest bass.

This is one of the reasons a subwoofer can be such a natural partner for bookshelf speakers and compact standmount speakers.

Instead of replacing your compact speakers with larger ones, you can keep the speakers that suit your room and add a dedicated solution for the lowest frequencies.

Why a 2.1 stereo system makes sense

A 2.1 stereo system is simply a conventional left-and-right stereo setup with the addition of a subwoofer.

Left speaker + right speaker + subwoofer.

Unlike a surround sound system, a 2.1 Hi-Fi system remains focused on stereo music reproduction. The left and right speakers create the stereo image, while the subwoofer extends the system's low-frequency performance.

For someone building a compact stereo system, this can be an attractive alternative to buying larger floorstanding speakers.

You can maintain a relatively small footprint while gaining some of the benefits associated with a larger loudspeaker system. And because low frequencies are much less directional than midrange and high frequencies, a subwoofer can often be positioned relatively discreetly within the room.

This makes a 2.1 system particularly well suited to modern living spaces, where the best Hi-Fi system is often the one that works with the room rather than taking it over.

The DALI BASIK SUB: deeper bass for compact stereo systems

The BASIK SUB has been designed with this type of system in mind. It provides a dedicated low-frequency foundation for compact stereo speakers, adding depth, weight and scale without requiring you to move to large floorstanding loudspeakers.

At the heart of BASIK SUB is an 8-inch long-stroke driver, supported by a dedicated 170 W RMS Class-D amplifier. The down-firing driver is designed to distribute low-frequency energy throughout the room, while the compact cabinet makes it easier to integrate the subwoofer into your living space.

For stereo applications, BASIK SUB offers stereo RCA connections and an adjustable crossover from 40 to 120 Hz. This allows you to find the right balance between the subwoofer and your main speakers, depending on your system, room and personal preferences.

The aim is not for BASIK SUB to dominate your music.

The aim is for it to become part of the system.

When a subwoofer is correctly integrated, you should not necessarily be thinking about where the bass is coming from. Instead, you should simply experience a greater sense of depth and scale across your music.

How to integrate a subwoofer with bookshelf speakers

Getting the most from a 2.1 stereo system is about balance.

A subwoofer that is set too high can make the bass sound exaggerated or disconnected from the main speakers. Set too low, and you may not hear the full benefit of adding it.

The crossover setting is therefore important. BASIK SUB's adjustable crossover gives you the flexibility to find the point where the subwoofer naturally takes over from your main speakers.

The ideal setting will depend on your loudspeakers, room and listening position, so it is worth experimenting. Start with a relatively conservative setting and listen to familiar music. The best result is usually the one where you notice the improvement in the music rather than the presence of the subwoofer.

Listen for things such as the weight of a bass guitar, the impact of a kick drum or the depth of the lowest notes in a piano or electronic track. If the system feels more natural, spacious and effortless without the bass drawing attention to itself, you are heading in the right direction.

DALI KUPID and BASIK SUB: a small system with a big sound

KUPID is an excellent example of how much performance can be achieved from a very compact loudspeaker.

Its small footprint makes it easy to position in a variety of spaces, whether on furniture, a shelf or mounted on a wall. This makes KUPID particularly appealing if you want a genuine stereo system but have limited space.

Adding BASIK SUB creates a compact 2.1 Hi-Fi system that retains the convenience of small speakers while extending the overall frequency range.

KUPID handles the stereo presentation, while BASIK SUB provides the deeper foundation underneath it. The result is a system that can occupy very little visual space while producing a surprisingly large and engaging sound.

For smaller rooms, apartments and modern living spaces, this can be an especially compelling combination.

DALI SONIK 1 and BASIK SUB: compact Hi-Fi with greater scale

SONIK 1 offers another approach to compact stereo. Its 5¼-inch woofer and compact cabinet provide a little more scale while retaining the flexibility of a standmount loudspeaker.

Pairing SONIK 1 with BASIK SUB takes that approach further.

The main speakers can focus on delivering the stereo image, detail and musical character, while the subwoofer extends the system into the deepest frequencies.

For listeners who want the flexibility of bookshelf or standmount speakers but don't want their system to sound limited by its size, this combination offers an appealing balance between compact design and full-range performance.

Do you need a subwoofer for your compact stereo system?

Not necessarily.

A good pair of compact speakers can provide an excellent listening experience on its own. Adding a subwoofer is about what you want from your system.

If you are happy with the bass extension of your existing speakers, there may be no reason to add one.

But if you listen to music with significant low-frequency content, have a larger room, enjoy the physical impact of bass, or simply want your compact stereo system to sound bigger and more full-range, a subwoofer can make a meaningful difference.

It is also an appealing option if you don't want to replace your existing speakers.

Rather than moving to larger loudspeakers, you can keep the compact design you already like and add a dedicated subwoofer as your system develops.

Bigger sound without bigger speakers

One of the biggest advantages of a compact 2.1 stereo system is that it gives you another way to think about building a Hi-Fi system.

You don't have to choose between compact speakers and full-range sound.

You don't necessarily need large floorstanding speakers to experience deep, powerful bass.

And you don't need a complicated multi-channel system to create a bigger, more immersive listening experience.

With the right combination of compact stereo speakers and a well-integrated subwoofer, you can keep your system simple while giving your music greater depth, weight and scale.

That's the idea behind the BASIK SUB.

It doesn't replace the things you like about compact speakers. It complements them.

So whether you're building a new system around KUPID or looking to add more depth to SONIK 1, a 2.1 configuration offers a simple way to make a compact stereo system sound bigger.

Small speakers don't have to mean small sound. With the right subwoofer, your compact stereo system can go deeper, sound bigger and bring more of your music to life.
