A new generation of vinyl lovers - Phoebe F.

Streaming has made music more accessible than ever, but for many listeners, convenience isn't the whole story. Across the world, a growing number of music fans are rediscovering the pleasures of physical formats, dedicated listening and building personal hi-fi systems at home.
Phoebe is part of that movement. At just 15, she has already built a carefully curated bedroom system centred around vinyl records, proving that a passion for music and great sound knows no age.

Having a record player has completely changed the way I listen to music. It’s made me appreciate albums from start to finish rather than just individual songs, and it’s helped me become more patient and open-minded with music I might not have liked instantly.”
From everyday listening to active listening
Music plays a central role in Phoebe's daily life. Whether she's getting ready for school, walking home, revising or creating artwork, there is usually a soundtrack accompanying the moment.
One of her earliest music memories is dancing to The Jackson 5's "ABC" at a family wedding. Since then, her relationship with music has continued to evolve, particularly as she became more interested in how music sounds, not just what she listens to.
That curiosity led her from a single wireless speaker to a dedicated stereo system and eventually a turntable.
"The change to a proper stereo setup means you hear music differently," she explains. "It made me realise how immersive physical media can be compared to streaming."
Why vinyl still matters
While streaming remains an important tool for discovering new artists, vinyl has become Phoebe's preferred way to listen.
For her, records encourage a deeper connection with the music. Rather than skipping between tracks, she listens to albums in their entirety, appreciating the sequencing, artwork and storytelling that artists put into their releases.
She also enjoys the tangible aspects of collecting records, from sleeve artwork to reading lyrics while listening.

Building a collection with character
Phoebe's taste spans decades and genres. Her current favourites range from contemporary artists such as Tame Impala, Bicep and Jungle to influential names including Sade, Beastie Boys and The Prodigy.
New discoveries often come through Spotify recommendations, while her parents continue to introduce her to artists and albums that have shaped their own musical journeys. More recently, she has been exploring modern jazz and nu-jazz artists such as Berlioz.
Every record in her collection holds personal significance. Among her favourites are special editions of Radiohead's A Moon Shaped Pool and Massive Attack's Blue Lines, both carefully chosen additions that she saved for herself.
Music, memories and discovery
Like many passionate listeners, Phoebe associates music with moments and memories.
Radiohead's "Weird Fishes" remains particularly important because it was the first song that introduced her to an entirely new musical landscape. One of her favourite concert experiences was seeing Tame Impala with her mum, combining a shared love of music with the excitement of live performance.
Her curiosity extends beyond vinyl, too. Recently, she spent an afternoon listening to a Neneh Cherry cassette on a vintage Walkman using wired headphones discovered in her family's loft, a reminder that every format offers its own unique experience.
