At DALI, exceptional sound quality is only part of the story. Behind every loudspeaker lies an extensive programme of testing and validation designed to ensure that products not only perform beautifully, but also withstand the realities of transport, climate, daily use and time itself.
Building confidence through testing
In DALI’s Quality department, testing is about far more than ticking boxes. It is a structured and evolving process that combines international standards, internal expertise and continuous improvement, all with one goal in mind: ensuring products reach customers performing and looking exactly as they should.
Jesper D. Bruun, Manager of DALI’s Quality department, works at the centre of this process, helping define how products are tested and how standards are interpreted and implemented across the company.
“Fundamentally, our job is to ensure that the products arrive with customers in the condition we intended,” says Jesper. “But it’s also about creating efficient systems and clear procedures, so testing is consistent and reliable every single time.”
DALI distinguishes between operational production testing, such as acoustic checks, functional testing and visual inspections during manufacturing, and the extensive validation testing carried out before a product is released to market.
It is in this validation phase that products are exposed to some of the most demanding conditions imaginable.
Simulating the real world
One of the most important parts of DALI’s testing programme is climate testing. Loudspeakers are subjected to extreme temperatures and humidity levels to simulate transportation and storage conditions across global markets.
Products are tested at temperatures ranging from -20°C to +70°C, alongside high-humidity environments reaching 93% relative humidity at 40°C.
These tests help DALI evaluate not only the product itself, but also the effectiveness of the packaging.
“We test both packaged and unpackaged products,” explains Jesper. “Partly to accelerate the process, but also to ensure that the packaging itself can withstand humidity and temperature changes.”
DALI also performs extensive corrosion testing in salt chambers, particularly for outdoor products such as the DALI GARDIAN. Components can spend hundreds and in some cases more than a thousand hours exposed to corrosive environments in order to validate long-term durability.
Designed to survive the journey
Packaging plays a vital role in protecting premium loudspeakers during global transportation. To ensure products survive the realities of modern logistics, DALI carries out advanced drop and vibration testing based on international ISTA standards.
These tests simulate impacts, stacking pressure and the vibrations experienced during transport by lorry, rail, ship and air freight.
The company has evolved its packaging strategy significantly in recent years, moving towards more sustainable solutions while improving protection performance.
“The packaging has to protect the product, but it also has to make sense environmentally,” says Jesper. “We’re constantly looking for better solutions that balance protection, sustainability and practicality.”
Newer packaging concepts increasingly use reinforced paper-based constructions and recyclable materials in place of traditional expanded polystyrene wherever possible.
Testing beyond acoustics
Many of DALI’s quality tests focus on aspects customers may never consciously notice, but which contribute significantly to the long-term ownership experience.
Surface durability is tested against scratches, chemicals, UV exposure and abrasion. Products are exposed to substances such as coffee, red wine, hand cream and sun cream to evaluate how finishes react to everyday use.
Specialised UV testing systems simulate years of sunlight exposure in accelerated conditions, helping DALI ensure finishes maintain their appearance over time.
The company also evaluates colour consistency with advanced colour measurement systems to ensure products match precisely across suppliers and production batches.
“For white finishes especially, even very small variations become visible,” Jesper explains. “That’s why we invest heavily in colour control and supplier alignment.”
A continuous process of improvement
Not every test begins with a formal standard. In many cases, DALI develops its own internal methodologies based on real-world observations, customer feedback and long-term product behaviour.
The Quality department continuously refines and formalises these procedures into what we call DSTM - DALI Standardised Test Methods - creating clear internal standards that ensure consistency across future projects.
This philosophy extends beyond technical validation and into customer experience itself. Even product unboxing is tested, often using newly hired employees with no prior product familiarity to ensure the process feels intuitive and seamless.
Quality as part of the DALI DNA
For DALI, testing is not simply a final checkpoint before release. It is an integrated part of product development from the very beginning.
The result is an extensive quality programme that supports the craftsmanship, reliability and longevity expected from a premium audio brand.
“There’s a very large arsenal of tests behind every product,” says Jesper. “Nothing is left to chance.”
From climate chambers and salt spray testing to vibration rigs and UV simulation, every stage reflects the same ambition: delivering loudspeakers that look great and perform beautifully not only on day one, but for many years to come.
